LE "VIEUX PORT"

Today, it is one of the emblematic places of Marseille. It is the natural meeting place for all Marseille residents and visitors. This is where you come to feel the atmosphere of Marseille, between the fish market and the excitement of the city center. On the evenings when OM plays, the bars of Marseille broadcast the match and the supporters come to celebrate the victories in the Old Port.

Toulon

Coat of arms of Toulon Toulon is a French war port. It is one of the main ones with Brest and formerly Rochefort.

The site is of exceptional quality, hence the maritime and military vocation of the port since Roman times1. At the foot of the natural heights of Faron, Coudon, Gros-Cerveau and Mont Caume, the harbor of Toulon stands out as one of the most beautiful in the world1. Protected from large swells by the Hyères islands and the Giens peninsula, divided into large and small harbors, the bay welcomed the Phoenicians then the Romans under the name of Telo Martius (from Telo: the Ligurian goddess of springs - or from Latin tolus: foot of hill - and Martius: Latin god of war). The Greeks shelter there their ships cruising between Massalia and Olbia. A murex fishery is developing there, a large sea snail used to dye togas. Under the Roman Empire, Telo Martius then became one of the two imperial dye works of purple, a natural red dye, thanks to the exploitation of Murex and kermes oak mealybugs, then dominant in the region.

HE REPRESENTS "THE PROVENCE"

  • Marcel Pagnol is a French writer, playwright, filmmaker and producer, born February 28, 1895 in Aubagne (Bouches-du-Rhône) and died in Paris on April 18, 1974. He became famous with Marius, a play performed at the theater in March 1929. He founded his own production company and film studios in Marseille in 1934, and directed numerous films with the great actors of the period (in particular Raimu, Fernandel and Pierre Fresnay), including Angèle (1934), Regain (1937) and The Baker's Wife (1938). In 1946, he was elected to the French Academy. After 1956, he moved away from cinema and theater and began writing his Childhood Memories, including: My Father's Glory and My Mother's Castle. He finally published, in 1962, L'Eau des collines, a novel in two volumes: Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources, inspired by his film Manon des sources, made ten years earlier and starring Jacqueline Pagnol.
